Staff Policies
The following are policies that each member of the Camp Firwood Summer Staff is expected to abide by.
Cell Phone Policy
We have a “No Cell Phone” policy at Camp Firwood for staff. This policy is in effect from Sunday at 1:00pm until the end of closing day on Saturday. There are several reasons for this policy including the following:
Distraction
Cell phones and texting remove staff members from performing their assigned duties to the best of their abilities. Cell phone usage, by its very nature, removes a staff member from the community that we are trying to build.
Sabbath
We believe in taking a sabbath [break] from things in our lives to help us focus on God. We refrain from watching “R” rated movies during the summer and now we will be taking a sabbath from cell phones. The act of taking a sabbath or fasting from an activity for a season is a Biblical principle that we want to put into practice. The summer is a great time to unplug from the world and experience God’s creation without distractions.
Legal
With the increase in popularity of camera and internet enabled phones, the chance of inappropriate pictures of camp being released to the public increases. It is our duty and responsibility to create a safe place for campers as parents have entrusted us with them. Keeping campers safe is our #1 priority.
Implementation
There are a few issues that come out in implementing this policy which will be covered in this section.
Alarm Clock
Many former staff have used their cell phone as an alarm clock. In order to make sure staff are on time, Firwood will be issuing (1) alarm clock to each counselor as well as (1) to each CIT and LP cabin. If this alarm clock is lost or broken, it is that staff members responsibility to replace it.
Family Emergency
If you need to get in contact with your family or someone from your family needs to get in contact with you, we will have a phone available for you to use. Phone numbers for key staff will be distributed at camp during the summer.
